Cultivar is a sculptural study of engineered fruit. Each unit is a 3D printed shell, identical in form, and arranged in precise repetition to form a larger apple shape. This physical patterning reflects the biological and industrial systems behind real apples: every apple we eat is a clone, bred for shelf life, stored in controlled environments, and released on a schedule.
Domestic apples are not wild. They are entirely human creations, descended from unstable wild ancestors and perpetuated through grafting. Even the apples planted by Johnny Appleseed were used for cider, not eating. Today’s fruit is optimized, replicated, and packaged for consumption.
This work is not a critique of that system; it’s a confrontation with the myth of purity. The problem isn’t that we shape our world. The problem is pretending we don’t, risking the loss of insight, control, and the powerful patterns we’ve already learned to use.
